Celebrate Earth Day- Get the toxins out of your home
If you think the earth is polluted and needs to be cleaned up, check out the toxic chemicals you have under your sink.
So, you work hard to keep your house clean- although the kids and dogs work hard to keep the dirt coming in. It is an endless battle. So you ask, ” now with Earth Day you want me to do more?” Yup, and here is why!
Many off-the-shelf cleaning products have chemicals that can directly impact your immune system. Ingredients in certain products are toxic if they enter our body. What that means is that our immune system needs to work hard to process the chemicals and expel them before they do damage to our cells. For many people the immune system can process the common household toxins and the immediate impact is negligible. But, there is a cumulative effect. (similar to being in a constant state of stress- sooner than later it will overwhelm your capacity to manage the stress hormones and symptoms appear. ….). And, where do you want your immune system to target its resources- on chemicals that you can replace and or on viruses, bacteria and other nasty things that you (your family) encounter. The answer is easy, so ask yourself these questions.
You say that you try to do everything right. You don’t feed your kids junk food; you are an organic junkie; you get plenty of sleep; you exercise and give your family supplements/vitamins. What more do I have to do?
Try this process to determine what you may want to do:
Step 1. Do a quick health check: do your kids…
- Miss numerous days of school?
- Break out in rashes when wearing newly washed clothes- especially infants?
- Have asthma and allergy attacks?
- Have difficulty paying attention in school?
- Are always tired…just dragging?
- Have constant ear infections, colds, flu or worse etc.?
In other words, are they a magnet that catches every sickness going around?
And for our stay-at-home moms- this is important for you too! Research shows that stay-at-home moms have a 42% higher rate of illnesses than women working outside of the home.
Step 2. Check the ingredient list of your cleaning and laundry products for any of the following chemicals. (These are the most common culprits)
- Chlorine Bleach is the chemical most frequently involved in household poisonings in the U.S.
- Degreasers may contain petroleum distillates, which can damage lung tissues and dissolve fatty tissue around nerve cells
- Glass Cleaners may contain ammonia. Ammonia fumes can irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory system
- Oven Cleaners can be one of the most dangerous cleaning products, which can cause severe damage to eyes, skin, mouth, and throat
- Toilet Bowl Cleaners can be extremely dangerous cleaning products, which can be harmful just by breathing the fumes—and fatal if swallowed
Step 3. Become a detective: Not every person responds the same to assaults on their immune system. For some, the symptoms may be negligible, but working undercover. For many kids, with whom we have worked, we found quick results by changing the laundry detergent to an organic detergent; moving from a harsh cleaning agent/disinfectant to an alternative disinfectant, and basically ridding the household of any items on the list in number 2.
Step 4. Exchange suspected culprits with organic, bio-degradable – non chemical cleaning agents and watch the results.
Fact: If your kids have rashes, asthma attacks, catch every cold and virus, chances are that their immune system is being taxed beyond its capacity to process the germs and toxins entering their bodies. The capacity to process toxins is different for every person and the capacity can vary daily. What impacts one person may be different for the next. For example: our grandson had a horrible reaction to a common household detergent- major itching and rashes. Changing the laundry detergent got rid of the rashes. And guess what, when he visited his aunt and she used the culprit detergent to wash his clothes, again, the rash reappeared.
Earth Day is more than spending a few hours cleaning a local stream or park, planting a tree or listening to a school presentation on how we are impacting the earth environment. Immediately, cleaning your personal space of toxins impacts you and your family’s health. And just think, if households are focused on eliminating their household toxins, and making their home the safest place on earth….what impact that will have for Earth Day nationally?
